Actor. Most remembered for his role as the brutal Bill Sykes in the award winning 1968 musical "Oliver!", Reed mostly played heavy roles that were suitable to his rough good looks. His off-screen persona was equal to that of his on-screen performances: he was a notorious drinker, carouser, womanizer and brawler. He was also known to have had public disputes with the likes of Bette Davis, Jack Nicholson, Richard Harris, and Shelley Winters. Reed had a very humorous view of life and death, and he left almost $20,000 to his favorite pub to cover his post-funeral celebration costs. Some of his quotes are as follows: "You meet a better class of people in pubs." "I do not live in the world of sobriety." "My only regret is that I didn't drink every pub dry and sleep with every woman on the planet." "Ollie" as he was known to his friends, died as he lived - drinking hard. His body was returned to his favorite Irish village, and he was buried in a spot where there is a full view of his favorite pub. (bio by: Ron Greenberg)

J.R. Ewing may have been laid to rest on Monday night's "Dallas," but don't expect the legendary character, who was played by the late Larry Hagman, to become less important on the show.
"It's not like the character is going to disappear," Patrick Duffy, who plays Bobby Ewing, told Access Hollywood over the weekend at the Paley Center, as he showed off the J.R. Ewing watch on loan from the Hagman Family as part of the WB Out of the Box exhibit. "The influence that the character of J.R. has on the show could run another 10 years. PLAY IT NOW: The Walking Dead: Scott Wilson - 'It's Mind-Blowing' How Successful The Show Is "The character of J.R. was so omnipresent when Larry was alive, who knows what that character did without us knowing -- if that's going to pop up in year four, five and six," Patrick added. Jesse Metcalfe, who plays Patrick's on-screen son, Christopher Ewing, said the death of the J.R. character creates big drama for the rest of Season 2. VIEW THE PHOTOS: Dallas: Scenes & Stars Of The Southfork Drama "J.R.'s murder really sets in motion a lot of storylines that pay off in a very big way throughout the second half of the season, and especially in the season finale," Jesse told Access , ahead of the "Dallas" PaleyFest event at the Saban Theatre on Saturday in Los Angeles. As fans saw at the end of Monday night's episode of "Dallas," J.R. was working on two things when he was killed - looking for Christopher Ewing's mother - Pamela Ewing, and working on taking down Ann Ewing's ex-husband, Harris Ryland. "J.R. was on to something pretty interesting," "Dallas" Executive Producer Mike Robin told Access , when asked about the trail for Pam. VIEW THE PHOTOS: Jesse Metcalfe: From Desperate Housewives To Dallas "Yes, he was on to something interesting have to do with Christopher's mother that would help Christopher and the family," Cynthia Cidre, Executive Producer of "Dallas," added. "And hopefully, as with most things that we do, what you're expecting is not going to happen and when we go left, we really go right. I just hope the fans enjoy all the twists and turns having to do with that story." Although there will be drama on the way, producers did confirm to Access the new "Who shot J.R.?" storyline will be concluded by the end of the season. No worries, "Dallas" fans -- if you're thinking the second season of "Dallas" is going to end with a cliffhanger about the identity of the person who pulled the trigger on J.R. Ewing, the series's producers have assured fans that the killer will be revealed by the end of the season.
Producers Cynthia Cidre and Mike Robin appeared on Sunday with the cast of TNT's "Dallas" reboot at a PaleyFest session in Beverly Hills, where Cidre and Robin said that J.R.'s killer would be revealed by the end of the next eight episodes. "J.R.'s Masterpiece," the March 11 episode, confirms that J.R. Ewing, the rascally oil man played by late TV icon Larry Hagman, was fatally shot at the end of last week's episode. "Masterpiece" finds friends, family, foes, and ex-loves all descending upon the memorial service and funeral to share stories about the wily J.R. [Related: Producers Preview J.R. Ewing's Funeral Saying It Will Sparks Tears and Shocks] Original series and reboot star Patrick Duffy, who, the producers confirmed, is the only cast member currently who knows the identity of the shooter, calls the homage to the 1980 "Who shot J.R.?" storyline "probably the most brilliant piece of scriptwriting … in the way that it resolves a problem with such dignity and respect … it's a "pinnacle of 'Dallas' writing," he concluded. Other tidbits from the PaleyFest session with the cast, who all shared their love of and favorite moments with Hagman: Original series stars Audrey Landers -- who plays Afton, the mom of Cliff Barnes's daughter, Rebecca (Julie Gonzalo) -- and Joan Van Ark (Gary Ewing's on-again, off-again wife, Valene) will be making appearances in the next couple of episodes. Cidre confirmed that, had Hagman lived, there was talk of reuniting J.R. and ex-wife Sue Ellen, which nearly made star Linda Gray, Sue Ellen's portrayer, teary. Cidre and Robin shared that they were able to have J.R.'s death play out the way it does because of a lot of extra footage the editing crew was able to cull from Seasons 1 and 2 of the reboot. Duffy talked about how he and Hagman, one of his best friends since the two portrayed the Ewing brothers on the original series, loved to play pranks on each other, and the best he played on Hagman were once putting a lizard in his briefcase and once paying a naked man to surprise Hagman when he opened a bedroom closet as J.R. [Related: How Larry Hagman Created TV's Best Villain] In "J.R.'s Masterpiece," a beautiful custom-designed bottle of bourbon in J.R.'s room plays a role in one of the episode's most emotional scenes. Cidre says the show has teamed up with a premium bourbon maker to produce a libation that will come packaged in a replica of the bottle. Fan-favorite moments from the session included Duffy, Gray, and their onscreen sons, Josh Henderson and Jesse Metcalfe, re-enacting scenes from the original "Dallas" involving Bobby, Sue Ellen, and elementary school-age John Ross and Christopher; Henderson sharing that he called Hagman "Pops"; one audience member's detailed question to Duffy about a nearly 30-year-old episode of "Dallas"; and one fan's thank-you: She watched the original series as a kid but is grateful that it was brought back because now her mom allows her to watch the kissing scenes, she joked. [Related: What Were J.R.'s Last Words to His Son?] The original series was famous for its season-ending cliffhangers, which often involved a freeze-frame close-up of a cast member (which was usually Hagman, Duffy and Gray joked). Cidre confirmed that there will be two freeze frames at the end of this season, though she's not sure whose will come first. She did say that Jordana Brewster, who plays Christopher's fiancée, Elena, has "a big moment" in the finale. |
