I Know What You Did Last Summer :D

Lou sides:
interior dive bar – pool table- night. Sam, pool cue in hand appears totally wasted. He’s trying to convince his opponent to give him one more chance to win his money back. The other guy is tough guy sort of person and is pocketing the money he’s already won off Sam. He’s pretty sure he can get even more off Sam and agrees to another game. Just then Dean shows up and steps in telling tough guy that Sam’s too drunk to be playing. Sam tells him to shut up – he’s fine and wants to play. Dean tries to explain to Sammy that’s not really fine, he’s drunk and it’s time to go home now. Sam just ups his bet t$500. Dean is so not happy. Sam slams down the cash and the cash & looks at Dean – it’s a con. Sam puts his cash down and breaks. It’s perfect and the tough guy knows he’s been had. Just then Sam looks up and sees something at the bar – he’s startled and walks away from the game as he tells the other guy he can keep the money.

Crossroad Demon sides: (flashback)
exterior dirt crossroads – day. Sam has a box under his arm & kneels in the dirt and digs a hole with his hands. He’s carrying a bottle of whiskey and takes a drink every once in a while. He’s hit bottom – he’s angry and overwhelmed. He stands up and looks around waiting for the CRD to appear. Finally he starts screaming for it. Then it appears – this one looks like a lawyer – and explains it was reluctant to appear given what Sam did to the last one. The demon comments on Sam’s appearance – saying he doesn’t look so hot – burying Dean didn’t agree with Sam so much. For a second it seems like Sam might attack him too, but instead he walks over to a picnic table and sits down.

The name of this episode has officially replaced "Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things" as my all-time favorite Supernatural title. They are so much more creative nowadays than they were in season one! It is a reference to the well-known book by Judy Blume Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret in which a young girl deals with her belief in God (among other things). After the events of the first episode of this season, Dean has his own questions about God with which he must wrestle, and the fact that he is equated to a pre-teen girl going through puberty is just a bonus.

First Dean, Sam and Bobby have a different problem when the ghosts of victims they were unable to save come back to torment them. As previews have already revealed, this includes two little girls who died on a job Bobby worked as well as Agent Henricksen, who was killed in season three's "Jus in Bello", and Meg, who died in the first season finale. These last two characters are interesting choices to haunt the Winchesters and the issue of guilt here is thought provoking, to say the least. It is a treat to have Charles Malik Whitfield back as Henricksen, even if it is a brief visit. And if Nikki Aycox had played Meg with the level of nuance she brings to the character in this episode, I would have liked her a lot more in season one. It is somewhat amusing that they needed to write in a line about the character's appearance; her hair is so different from how it was in season one that the audience might have had trouble placing her.

The best part of this episode involves Dean and Sam working closely with Bobby and sharing his wealth of knowledge and expertise. We are introduced to one pretty great piece of equipment Bobby has built that we haven't seen before. When Dean and Sam see it for the first time their reaction is like a kid in a candy store, and Dean speaks for all of us when he says, "Bobby, you're awesome!" This is the man who showed them how to make a devil's trap back in season one, he definitely knows what he is doing. I also love any episode in which Bobby calls Dean or Sam an idiot, and he does that nearly every time they work together.

True to the title, there is some discussion about God after the revelation last week that Dean was rescued from hell by the angel Castiel, on God's orders. Dean and Sam both react to this knowledge how you would expect, based on what we already know each of them is and is not willing to believe. In addition, Dean has some questions about God that have been pondered by theologians and philosophers for centuries. These are not lightweight topics and I don't know that there will be any solid answers forthcoming. When Castiel has a chance to speak with Dean he directs him to look at the bigger picture. Meanwhile, the show's bigger picture is peppered with a pinch of the Bible thrown into the blender with Supernatural's own mythology.

The action-filled climax of the conflict with the ghosts was a bit of a letdown for me, but hopefully that was because the screener version of the episode I watched was just a rough cut. It was somewhat repetitious in the end with how they dealt with the spirits, and I'm sure it was supposed to feel more exciting than it did. However, the episode as a whole continued to expand the Supernatural mythology and give more details about the direction of the season, and overall it was quite successful.
